5 Reasons You Should Visit Hell’s Gate National Park

I will never forget the first time I saw a giraffe running. I saw several giraffes actually. So beautiful. So delicate. So quite. So peaceful. So free. I could not stop smiling for the rest of the day.

It happened at Hell’s Gate National Park as I was riding my bike down the open field.

Hell’s Gate National Park is located in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya. It offers a beautiful bio-diversity, unbelievable scenery, towering cliffs, tall rock-towers, magnificent gorges, endless fields, and great hiking opportunities…and animals, you can’t forget about all the beautiful animals, such as giraffes, zebras, and gazelles.

You may be happy to learn that the popular Disney movie, The Lion King was modeled after the park, where several lead crew members visited for research and fell in love with its beauty. Visiting the park, you will definitely find spots that will remind you of your favorite cartoon.

Fun fact: Unlike in the Lion King, there are no lions at Hell’s Gate.

If there are no lions, why should you visit the park? There are many reasons for it.

Why You Should Visit Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate Is the Most Affordable Safari

Hell’s Gate National Park is easy to access from Nairobi with a matatu (minibus used for public transportation by local) for a day-trip. It costs nearly half the price of other parks. More importantly, you don’t need to rent a jeep or a car, and you certainly don’t need to hire a guide from a tourist agency. You can bike or hike the park on your own! This brings me to my next point.

You Can Bike and Hike

Since there are no predators, like lions or cheetahs or big animals that can hurt you, it is safe to walk or bike around. Biking is the preferred option by most. You can rent a bike at the gate. Trust me, it’s so much fun.

You Can Walk through a Beautiful Gorge

There is a sad story about this. The gorge strongly resembles the one where our beloved Mufasa died, but try not to think about that. It is out of this world gorgeous.

You Can Hike, Rock Climb, and Camp

The park also offers wonderful opportunities for hiking for beautiful views. You can enjoy some rock climbing as well. If you wish to stay overnight, you can camp out as well.

You Can See Many Magnificent Animals in the Wild

The main reason to visit a national park in Kenya is to see the animals. You won’t be disappointed. You will see many zebras, giraffes, gazelles, antelopes, and baboons. You can also spot buffalos, eagles, and over a 100 bird species.

Have I convinced you yet to visit Hell’s Gate National Park? Wait, are you searching for an airline ticket to Kenya right now? I can’t blame you. After all, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page”.
